Local tradition says the Kashmiri saint Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani prayed at Doodhpathri and, searching for water, pricked the ground with his stick so that milk came out, giving the valley its name.

Leh sits high enough that its fields give only one crop a year, mostly naked barley for tsampa. Down the Indus at Khalatse two crops are possible, and Leh's late-May sowing finds Khalatse's barley already half grown.

Nicholas Roerich settled at Naggar in 1928, founded the Urusvati Himalayan Research Institute nearby and lived there until his death in December 1947. He was cremated on the estate, where a memorial stone marks the spot.

Tabo was founded in 996 CE by the translator Rinchen Zangpo on behalf of Yeshe-Ö, king of the western Himalayan kingdom of Guge. It is the oldest continuously operating Buddhist monastery in India and the Himalaya.

The Sattal Christian Ashram was set up in 1930 by the American evangelist E. Stanley Jones on a former tea estate beside the lakes, and still runs as a retreat with its own chapel.

Boudhanath's restoration after the 2015 earthquake was led by the local community, cost about USD 2.1 million and used over 30 kg of gold. It reopened on 22 November 2016.
