Jageshwar Shravan festival
During Shravan, the monsoon month sacred to Shiva, Jageshwar's ancient temple valley fills with pilgrims, puja and fairs. The Jageshwar Monsoon Festival runs through the month, with crowds peaking on Mondays and bells and chants echoing among the deodars.
Shravan, which overlaps July and August, is the holiest month of the year for Shiva's devotees, and Jageshwar is one of the most important Shiva sites in Kumaon. Through the month the valley hosts what is called the Jageshwar Monsoon Festival, with daily puja, special rituals, and a fair along the road between the Dandeshwar and Jageshwar temples.
Pilgrims come from across Kumaon and beyond, many on Mondays, the day most associated with Shiva. They bathe, offer water and bel leaves to the lingams and arrange rituals with temple priests; making and worshipping clay lingams is a common Shravan practice here. Stalls sell offerings, sweets and household goods, and folk music adds to the atmosphere in the evenings.
It is also the height of the monsoon. Roads from Almora can be blocked by landslides, the stone courtyards are wet, and mist hangs in the deodar trees. For travellers, a weekday visit in Shravan gives the feel of the festival with smaller crowds. Keep spare days, travel in daylight and check current status before you travel.
Tips for the day
- Visit on a weekday rather than a Monday if you want to move around the temples comfortably.
- Carry rain gear and shoes with grip; courtyards and paths are slippery.
- Stay overnight in Jageshwar or Almora rather than driving back in the dark on monsoon roads.
