Saver trips · the affordable Himalaya
Real Himalaya trips on a small budget
State buses, shared jeeps, homestays and government rest houses. Every Saver trip keeps the same altitude rules and the same planner as our other tiers. What changes is the comfort, and we write that down.
A Saver day in most Indian hives costs about ₹2,000–4,000 per person for bed, food and local transport (indicative 2026). Our Saver trips start from ₹7,500 per person, twin sharing, from the trip's start point.

Hive by hive
What a Saver day costs in each hive
Per person, per day, once you are in the hive: bed, food and local transport. The cheapest months are the ones with low prices and weather that still works.
Spend less in Kashmir
Use shared Sumos from Srinagar's taxi stands to Tangmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg for a few hundred rupees a seat instead of a full-day cab.
Spend less in Ladakh
Book Delhi–Leh flights six to eight weeks ahead for June and July; last-minute fares can triple.
Spend less in Himachal
Book HRTC Volvo seats from Delhi on the HRTC online portal rather than through agents; the same seat often costs ₹200–400 more through a reseller.
Spend less in Spiti & Lahaul
Take the HRTC bus from Manali to Kaza (about ₹400–600) instead of a shared taxi seat (about ₹1,200–1,800); it leaves around 5 am in season.
Spend less in Garhwal
Take the 5 am UTC or GMOU buses from Rishikesh ISBT or the GMOU yard instead of a private taxi; Rishikesh to Sonprayag costs ₹500–800 a seat against ₹7,000–9,000 for a car.
Spend less in Kumaon
Take the overnight Ranikhet Express from Delhi to Kathgodam: a sleeper or 3AC berth costs less than a taxi and saves a hotel night.
Spend less in Nepal
Carry Indian ₹100 notes or change money into NPR at the border; the peg is fixed at 1 INR = 1.6 NPR, so anyone offering much less is taking a cut.
Spend less in Darjeeling & Kalimpong
Take an overnight sleeper from Kolkata to New Jalpaiguri instead of flying to Bagdogra; a sleeper berth costs about ₹500–700 and saves a hotel night.
Spend less in Sikkim
Use the shared jeeps from Siliguri's SNT stand and Gangtok's Deorali and Vajra stands; a seat to Gangtok or Gyalshing costs a few hundred rupees against several thousand for a reserved car.
Spend less in Bhutan
Indian nationals pay ₹1,200 a night SDF against USD 100 for most other passports, so an Indian passport or voter ID is the single biggest saving; carry it with at least six months' validity on the passport.
Spend less in Arunachal
Book shared Sumo seats a day ahead at the Tawang, Ziro or Aalo Sumo counters; a front seat costs a little more but is worth it on long hill days.

How Saver trips stay cheap
Where the money goes, and where it does not
State buses and shared jeeps
HRTC, KMOU and Bhutan Post buses, union jeeps and shared taxis on routes where they run daily in season. A seat costs a fraction of a private car.
Homestays and rest houses
Family homes, hostels and government tourist bungalows. Two meals are usually included. Bathrooms may be shared, and hot water may come by the bucket.
Shoulder months
Late March and April, October into November. Rooms cost less, buses are less full and the weather is usually settled.
Local food
Dal, rice, thukpa, momos and whatever the house is cooking. It is the cheapest food in each valley, and usually the best.
Same altitude rules
Saver trips keep the spare days and the 300–500 m a day rule above 3,000 m. A cheaper trip is never a faster climb.
The same planner
One planner on WhatsApp from the first message to the last bus. If a road closes, we rebook.

Questions
Travelling cheap, answered
What is the cheapest way to travel in the Himalaya?
State buses and shared jeeps, homestays and government tourist bungalows, and travelling in the shoulder months. A Saver day in most Indian hives costs about ₹2,000–4,000 per person for bed, food and local transport (indicative 2026). Overland Nepal and Bhutan by road are often cheaper than flying in.
Are Saver trips safe?
Yes, when they are planned well. We use routes where state buses and shared jeeps run every day in season, registered homestays and rest houses, and we keep a planner on WhatsApp throughout. Saver trips keep the same altitude rules and spare days as our other tiers.
What do Saver trips leave out?
Private transport, hotel comforts and sometimes an attached bathroom. In the high valleys a homestay may have a shared or outside toilet and hot water by the bucket. Each trip page says plainly what to expect.
Which hive is cheapest?
Spiti, Kumaon, Darjeeling and Nepal tend to be the easiest on a small budget, because buses, shared taxis and homestays are common. Bhutan and Ladakh cost more: Bhutan because of its daily Sustainable Development Fee, Ladakh because of flights and permits. Check current status before you travel.
When is the cheapest time to go?
The shoulder months either side of each hive's peak: late March and April, and October into November in most of the range. Rooms are cheaper, buses are less full and the weather is usually settled. Each hive page marks its low-price months.
Do Saver prices include travel to the start?
No. Saver prices start at the trip's start point, such as Shimla, Manali, Siliguri or Kathgodam. We suggest the cheapest way to get there, usually an overnight train or Volvo bus, and can book it for you.
