Budget Homestay village · Key Gompa and Kibber
Kibber homestays
Kibber, on a plateau above a deep gorge at about 4,270 m, has a good number of family homestays. In summer they are a quiet alternative to Kaza; in January and February they are the base for snow leopard trips, with one room heated by a bukhari stove.
Kibber was the last village on the old trade route to Ladakh over Parang La, and it still feels like a place where travellers rest. Families rent rooms in their stone and mud houses or in newer annexes, with dinner and breakfast included. In summer you can walk to Chicham bridge, watch the village fields being worked and go down to Key Gompa for morning prayers.
In winter Kibber changes role. From January to March, local spotters scan the cliffs for snow leopards following blue sheep, and the homestays heat one room with a stove and serve hot meals to small groups. Water can freeze and bathrooms are basic in that season. At about 4,270 m, Kibber is a night to take after Kaza, not before; check current status before you travel.

Around the stay
Key Gompa and Kibber
Key Gompa, 12 km from Kaza at 4,166 m, is the largest monastery in Spiti and the valley's postcard. Kibber, 7 km further at 4,270 m, is one of the highest villages inhabited year-round and the base for snow leopard trips in winter. Most visit on a day trip from Kaza; sleep in Kibber only once acclimatised.

Questions
About Kibber homestays
Should I stay in Kibber or Kaza?
Stay in Kaza for the first two nights, then move up to Kibber if you want quiet and an early start at Key. Kibber is about 600 m higher than Kaza, so do not make it your first night in Spiti.
Can I see snow leopards from a Kibber homestay?
Sightings happen around Kibber and Chicham from January to March, but nothing is guaranteed. Go with a local operator and spotters, and expect cold, slow days of watching.
Do Kibber homestays have hot water?
In summer, usually from solar heaters or by bucket. In winter, water often comes by bucket and bathrooms are basic.
