Ways to save in Sikkim
- Use the shared jeeps from Siliguri's SNT stand and Gangtok's Deorali and Vajra stands; a seat to Gangtok or Gyalshing costs a few hundred rupees against several thousand for a reserved car.
- For Tsomgo Lake and North Sikkim, join a shared permit tour from a registered Gangtok agency; a seat in a shared jeep with stay and meals costs far less than reserving a vehicle for two.
- Travel in March, early April or the first half of December, when Gangtok and Pelling room rates sit below the October and Durga Puja peak.
- Stay in village homestays in Yuksom, Lachung or Zuluk; meals are usually included and the money stays in the village.
- Eat at local canteens and momo shops off MG Marg, where a plate of momos or thukpa costs a fraction of hotel restaurant prices.
- Plan west Sikkim as a loop, Gangtok to Ravangla, Pelling and Yuksom, so you never pay for a car to return empty along the same road.
