Valley in Sikkim
Rhododendron meadows and a hot spring above Lachung
Yumthang is a high pasture valley at about 3,560 m, 24 km above Lachung in North Sikkim. The Shingba rhododendron sanctuary lines the road, flowering from April to early June, and a hot spring sits by the river. Visit as a morning trip from Lachung on a permit tour; add Zero Point if open.

This is Yumthang. Snowy ridges wall it in on both sides, and in summer herders bring yaks and cattle up to graze. In winter the valley floor lies under snow.
The forest just below is protected as the Shingba rhododendron sanctuary, home to many rhododendron species, from tall trees to dwarf shrubs. When they flower, from April into early June, the slopes turn red, pink, white and yellow. Later in the summer the meadows fill with primulas and other alpine flowers.
There are no hotels in Yumthang; everyone visits from Lachung, usually leaving at 6 am and returning for breakfast. Beyond the valley, the road continues for another 20 km or so to Yume Samdong, called Zero Point, at over 4,500 m, where the road ends among snowfields. Permits are required for both.
The sanctuary stretches along the road below Yumthang. From mid-April to May, rhododendrons of many species and colours flower, from tall trees near the road to low bushes on higher ground. Early mornings bring the best light and fewer vehicles.
A wide meadow with the river braiding across it and snow peaks on every side. Walk a little away from the parking area to find space. Grazing yaks and cattle are common from late spring to autumn.
A sulphur hot spring near the river, with a small enclosure where people soak their feet or bathe. It is a local tradition to take its waters for aches and skin complaints. Facilities are basic.
An extra 20 km or so above Yumthang, the road ends at Yume Samdong, over 4,500 m, surrounded by snow for much of the year. Access depends on permits, snow and army rules; check current status before you travel.
In March and early April, snow often still covers the valley while the lower forest begins to flower, giving both in a single morning.
