Munsiyari is far: about 280 km from Kathgodam on hill roads. Shared jeeps make it affordable, but going straight through means 10–12 hours in a crowded seat. We split the journey both ways, with a night in Almora and a night facing Panchachuli at Chaukori on the way in, and Kausani on the way out. That makes each day 3–7 hours and adds three good places to the trip.

In Munsiyari we stay in village homestays, where families serve home-cooked Kumaoni meals and know the paths. Four nights allow a full day for Khaliya Top, a day for the museum and villages, and a spare day for weather. Homestays are simple: shared or attached bathrooms depending on the house, bucket hot water in some, and very warm hospitality. The road is long; this is a trip for travellers who enjoy the journey.

Highlights

  • Panchachuli from both Chaukori and Munsiyari
  • Day hike to Khaliya Top at about 3,500 m
  • The story of the Johar salt and wool trade at the Tribal Heritage Museum
  • Birthi Falls and the Kalamuni ridge on the road in
  • Home-cooked Kumaoni meals in village homestays

Questions

About this trip

How much does a budget trip to Munsiyari cost?

This seven-night saver trip starts at ₹18,500 per person on twin sharing, including rooms, homestay meals, shared jeeps and a guide. Add trains, some meals and tips. Going straight to Munsiyari and back saves money but costs two very long days.

How long is the shared jeep ride to Munsiyari?

From Haldwani straight through it takes 10–12 hours. This trip breaks it into Almora–Chaukori and Chaukori–Munsiyari legs of about 4–5 hours each.

Do I need a permit for this trip?

No permit is needed for Munsiyari or Khaliya Top. An Inner Line Permit is needed only if you go beyond into the upper Johar valley towards Milam. Check current status before you travel.

Is Khaliya Top hard?

It is a moderate day hike with about 900 m of climbing to roughly 3,500 m. Fit walkers manage it in 6–8 hours return with breaks. Snow in spring can make it harder.

What are homestays in Munsiyari like?

Family homes with simple, clean rooms, home-cooked Kumaoni meals and hosts who share local stories. Bathrooms may be shared, and hot water may come in buckets. They are warm and welcoming.

Can I extend this trip to Milam glacier?

Yes, with extra days, an Inner Line Permit, a guide and good fitness. The Milam trek needs about a week more and sleeps above 3,000 m, so plan proper acclimatisation.

Is this trip suitable for solo travellers?

Yes. Shared jeeps and homestays suit solo travellers. Single rooms cost a little more per person. Tell your hosts your plans for each day.

When is the best time for this trip?

April to June and late September to November. October and November give the clearest views. Winter brings snow and very cold nights; July and August bring landslides.

What should I pack for Munsiyari?

Warm layers including a down jacket, rain gear, trekking shoes, a torch, water bottle, sunscreen, motion-sickness tablets for the road, and cash.
