Most visitors see Kumaon as Nainital plus one more hill town. This trip goes further in, two nights at a time, so each place gets a full day. You start at Nainital's lake, where the British built a summer capital in the 19th century; move to the fruit country of Ramgarh and Dhanachuli, where Jim Corbett tracked a man-eater; sleep inside Binsar's protected oak forest; and end at Kasar Devi above Almora, the town the Chand kings made their capital in the 16th century.

We use one hotel in each place: The Naini Retreat on the quiet Ayarpata side of Nainital, Te Aroha by Shervani at Dhanachuli, Mary Budden Estate in Binsar, and The Kumaon at Kasar Devi. Drives are 2–4 hours on travel days. Your guide joins for walks and sites, and the driver stays with you throughout.

Highlights

  • Chauli ki Jali cliffs and the Mukteshwar temple at dawn
  • Orchard villages of Ramgarh, Kumaon's fruit bowl

Questions

About this trip

What makes this a signature trip?

The hotels and the time. You sleep in four of Kumaon's best small hotels, two nights each, with a private car and driver throughout and a private guide on six days. Days are planned around early light and quiet hours, not the crowded middle of the day.

Is it good for families with children?

Yes, for children who like walks and are fine with short drives. The lake row, ropeway, orchards and forest walks work for most ages. Mary Budden Estate has limited rooms and quiet rules; ask us about family rooms there and at The Kumaon before booking.

Which months are best?

October to December for clear mountain views and dry roads; March and April for rhododendron and fruit blossom in Ramgarh. Avoid July and August for monsoon landslides, and May and June weekends in Nainital, when traffic on the lake road is heavy.

How long are the drives?

Between 1.5 and 4 hours on travel days. The longest is Dhanachuli to Binsar, about 90 km and 3.5–4 hours on hill roads. Day trips to Kainchi, Mukteshwar and Jageshwar are 1–1.5 hours each way.

Can we swap a hotel?

Yes. In Nainital some guests prefer a hotel on the Mall; near Mukteshwar, The Ramgarh Bungalows is a heritage alternative. We quote the difference. The Kumaon and Mary Budden Estate are the reason for the trip, so we keep them where we can.

Is Kumaon safe for driving at night?

We plan all drives in daylight. Hill roads have tight bends, few barriers and wildlife crossing, and leopards are seen near towns. Your driver knows the roads; we ask guests not to push for late drives even if the car is theirs for the day.

What does the guide do?

The guide walks with you in Nainital, Mukteshwar, Binsar, Almora and Jageshwar, explaining history, temples, plants and birds, and handles tickets and timings. In Binsar the estate's own naturalist may lead walks. We do not invent schedules around shopping stops.

What about Corbett National Park?

Corbett lies in the plains below Kumaon and adds 2 nights with jeep safaris. It is best from mid-November to mid-June, and safari permits sell out early. Ask us to add it at the start or end.

Do we need any permit?

No permit is needed for any place on this trip. Binsar sanctuary charges entry and vehicle fees at the gate, which we include for Indian nationals. Foreign nationals pay a higher sanctuary fee. Check current status before you travel, as fees change.
