This is a trip for people who want to stay put. We do not chase sights. Three nights at Kasar Devi give you the old Chand capital of Almora, the ridge where writers and seekers lived from the 1930s, and a day among the stone temples of Jageshwar. Three nights inside Binsar give you oak forest, birds, and sunrise from Zero Point on a ridge that the Chand kings used as a summer retreat.

Both hotels are small and both face the snow peaks. The Kumaon's chalets of local stone and bamboo-clad timber are spread down a terraced hillside; Mary Budden Estate is a restored colonial-era house on about five acres of forest, run on solar power and harvested rainwater. Drives are short, under four hours on the longest day, and every night sleeps below 2,500 m.

Highlights

  • Three nights at The Kumaon facing Trishul and Nanda Devi
  • A walk along Crank's Ridge and up to the Kasar Devi temple
  • A private guided day at the Jageshwar temple group
  • Three nights inside Binsar sanctuary at Mary Budden Estate
  • Sunrise from Zero Point over a 300 km line of peaks

Questions

About this trip

Why only two hotels in six nights?

Because the drive is the tiring part of Kumaon. Staying three nights in each place means you unpack twice, walk more and sit in a car less. The Kumaon and Mary Budden Estate are both in quiet spots with views, so the time in between sights is part of the trip, not wasted.

Is this trip good for a honeymoon?

Yes. Both hotels are small, quiet and private, with few other guests and views of the snow peaks from rooms and terraces. There are no crowds, no nightlife and limited mobile signal in Binsar. Couples who want shopping or a busy Mall should add a night in Nainital instead.

When is the best time for this trip?

October to December gives the clearest views of the peaks and dry trails. March and April bring red rhododendron flowers and bird song. January and February are cold but clear, with occasional snow at Binsar. We do not run it in July and August, when rain hides the views and roads slip.

How do we reach Kathgodam from Delhi?

The New Delhi–Kathgodam Shatabdi takes about six hours by day; the overnight Ranikhet Express arrives early morning. Pantnagar Airport, about 100 km from Kasar Devi, has limited flights from Delhi. Our driver can meet either. Check current status before you travel, as timings change.

How fit do we need to be?

Moderately. The walks are on paths and old bridle tracks of 3–8 km, with some climbs. The Zero Point walk from the estate is short but uphill in the dark. Every walk can be shortened, and the car can reach most trailheads if knees are a concern.

Is food included and what is it like?

Most meals are included as listed. Both hotels cook home-style Indian and continental food, often with Kumaoni dishes such as bhatt ki churkani or mandua roti if you ask. Tell us about any diet needs when you book so we can pass them on early.

Can we add Nainital or Mukteshwar?

Yes. Two nights at the start in Nainital or at Te Aroha in Dhanachuli near Mukteshwar fit well, since both are on the way from Kathgodam. Our 8-night signature trip covers Nainital, Mukteshwar, Binsar and Kasar Devi together.

Is there mobile network at Binsar?

Barely. Signal inside the sanctuary is weak or absent at many points, and power is solar with limits on heavy appliances. Tell family you will be mostly offline for three days. Almora and Kasar Devi have usable Jio and Airtel coverage.

Can seniors do this trip?

Yes, with care. Drives are short and both hotels are below 2,500 m. Some rooms at The Kumaon involve steps on the slope, and paths at Binsar are uneven. Tell us about mobility needs so we can request suitable rooms. Talk to your doctor if you have heart conditions.
