KMVN Tourist Rest House, Kausani
Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam's rest house on the Kausani ridge is one of the cheapest ways to wake up facing Trishul and Nanda Devi. It is plain and government-run, but its position on the ridge is what Kausani is about.
The rest house sits on the ridge in Kausani with a wide view of the peaks to the north, often mentioned as one of the best viewpoints in the village. It is a short walk from the bus stand, the Anasakti Ashram and the Pant museum, which makes it easy for travellers arriving by shared jeep or bus.
Rooms are basic, with simple furnishings and heating that varies; ask for a room facing the mountains. The kitchen serves Indian meals. Like all KMVN properties, bookings are made through the official KMVN website or offices, and service is straightforward rather than polished. For saver trips it offers excellent value, especially from October to February.
Why we use it
- Ridge-top position with a full Himalaya view

Around the stay
Kausani
Kausani is a pine-covered ridge village at about 1,890 m, 52 km north of Almora, facing a wide panorama of peaks from Trishul and Nanda Devi to Panchachuli. Gandhi stayed here for two weeks in 1929 and the Hindi poet Sumitranandan Pant was born here. Two nights covers the ashrams, tea estate and Baijnath.
