Budget Government tourist bungalow · Valley of Flowers & Hemkund
GMVN Tourist Rest House, Ghangaria
The state tourism corporation's rest house in Ghangaria, the base village for the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib, with simple rooms and dorm beds at government rates. Basic, but well placed and in high demand from June to September.
Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam, the Uttarakhand government's tourism corporation for Garhwal, runs rest houses along the pilgrim and trekking routes, and its Ghangaria property is one of the most useful. It sits in the village at 3,049 m, close to the forest checkpost for the Valley of Flowers and the path to Hemkund Sahib, so you can be on the trail by 7 am.
Expect a plain room with blankets, a simple dining hall and hot water that may come by the bucket. Electricity and water supply can be irregular in a village reached only on foot, and rooms get booked months ahead for July and August. It is the right choice for saver and student trips, and for anyone who values location over comfort. Book through GMVN's official channels.
Why we use it
- Government rates in a village where prices rise with every step
- Close to the Valley of Flowers checkpost and the Hemkund path
- Dorm beds make it workable for students and solo trekkers

Valley of Flowers & Hemkund
The Valley of Flowers is a national park at 3,350–3,650 m above Govindghat, open 1 June to 31 October and in full bloom from mid-July to late August. You trek about 10 km to Ghangaria, sleep there, and walk into the valley by day. Hemkund Sahib, at about 4,600 m, is a 6 km climb from the same base.

Questions
About GMVN Tourist Rest House, Ghangaria
How do I book the GMVN rest house in Ghangaria?
Through GMVN's official online booking or its reservation office in Dehradun or Rishikesh. Book as soon as your dates are fixed for July and August. Avoid third-party agents who add mark-ups. Check current status before you travel.
Does GMVN Ghangaria have hot water?
Hot water is usually available, often by the bucket at set hours rather than from a geyser on demand. Electricity can be intermittent. Bring a headlamp, a power bank and warm clothes for evenings.
Is food available at GMVN Ghangaria?
There is usually a simple dining hall serving dal, rice, roti and sabzi, and Ghangaria has many dhabas and the gurdwara langar nearby. Carry snacks for the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund days, as there is little food on those trails.
