Forest hike to Mehao Lake
Climb through evergreen forest inside Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary to a lake in the hills above Roing, with a local guide, an early start and a packed lunch.
Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary rises steeply behind Roing, and Mehao Lake lies in the forest high above the town. The usual route starts from a trailhead a short drive out of Roing and climbs on a narrow forest path for several hours. It is a demanding day: steep, often muddy, with roots and stream crossings, but the forest is rich and quiet and the lake still and cold.
You need permission from the forest department and a local guide who knows the trail; it is easy to lose the path. Start at first light so that you reach the lake by late morning and are back below the steepest sections well before dark. Carry plenty of water, lunch, a rain jacket and leech socks in damp weather.
Birds are the main wildlife you will notice, though the sanctuary also holds mammals that are rarely seen. Stay on the trail, keep noise low and carry out all rubbish. Conditions vary with weather and trail maintenance, so check current status before you travel.
