Trongsa Dzong and the Ta Dzong museum
Start in the round watchtower museum above town for the story of the Wangchuck penlops, then walk down to the dzong's tiered courtyards and temples on the spur above the gorge.

Today it is a museum with a chapel dedicated to Jigme Namgyal, the Trongsa Penlop who ruled from 1853 to 1870 and was father of the first king. Displays cover the monarchy, religious art, ritual objects and royal belongings. Allow an hour; photography is limited inside.
Then drive or walk down to Trongsa Dzong, Chökhor Rabtentse. A temple was first built here in 1543 and the Zhabdrung built the first dzong in 1647. The Chenrezig temple was added in 1715 and the Maitreya temple complex in 1771. It was damaged in the 1897 Assam earthquake and restored in 1927 and 1999. The dzong is built down a narrow spur in several levels connected by passages and stairs.
Look for the printing house where woodblocks have been used to print religious texts, and the courtyard where the Trongsa Tshechu is danced each December. Your guide wears a ceremonial scarf; you need long sleeves and long trousers or a skirt. From the lower courtyard, the Mangde Chhu roars far below.

Questions
Before you book
Why is Trongsa Dzong so important?
It controlled the only east–west route for centuries, and its penlops, the Wangchucks, became Bhutan's kings in 1907. Every crown prince still first takes the title of Trongsa Penlop. It is on Bhutan's tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status.
How long should I spend at Trongsa Dzong?
About 1–1.5 hours for the dzong and an hour for the Ta Dzong museum. If you have one night in Trongsa, visit in the afternoon on arrival or early the next morning before driving to Bumthang.
When is the Trongsa Tshechu?
In December, over five days with a thongdrel on the last morning. The 2026 tentative calendar listed 17–21 December. Check current status before you travel.
