Tea garden and orange orchard drive
A half-day drive through the tea estates around Mirik, including Thurbo, Soureni and the high Gopaldhara garden, with stops to watch plucking in season and, in winter, to walk an orange orchard with a local family.
Mirik is surrounded by tea. The lake itself was carved from land of the Thurbo estate, and the roads in from Siliguri, Darjeeling and Sukhiapokhri all run through gardens. Hire a car for a half day and ask the driver to take the high road through Gopaldhara, planted in 1881 and one of the highest estates in Darjeeling, with much of its tea between about 1,700 and 2,100 m.
In spring and early summer, women pluck two leaves and a bud by hand and carry them in baskets to the weighing sheds. Stop at viewpoints rather than walking into the bushes, and ask before photographing pluckers. Some estates sell tea at shops or outlets near their factories; whether you can enter a factory depends on the estate and the day.
In December and January the drive becomes an orange trip. Small orchards around Mirik Busty and nearby villages grow Darjeeling mandarins, and families sell fruit at roadside stalls. A homestay host or your driver can usually arrange a short orchard walk. Finish back at the lake for lunch.
