The trek starts at Barshaini, the end of the road, at around 2,200 m. Most people take the route through Nakthan village on the left bank, a steady climb through forest and orchards, with tea stalls along the way. Another trail along the right bank passes Rudra Nag, a waterfall with a small temple. Expect 4–6 hours up for most walkers, depending on fitness and acclimatisation.

At the top, the meadow opens up with views of the upper Parvati valley. A hot spring feeds a stone pool with separate sections; bathing is part of the pilgrimage for many visitors, as Kheerganga is linked with the legend of Shiva's son Kartikeya. In spring and autumn the meadow is quiet in the early morning. The altitude, close to 3,000 m, can cause headaches in people who have come straight from the plains, so drink water and walk slowly.

Rules on camps and overnight stays at Kheerganga have changed several times, with authorities restricting structures on the meadow to protect it. Check current status before you travel, and carry out all your waste. Do not go alone, and never take shortcuts off the main trail in poor visibility; travellers have been lost in the upper Parvati valley. Start early, as clouds and rain often build in the afternoon.

Questions

Before you book

How difficult is the Kheerganga trek?

Moderate. It is about 12 km one way with roughly 750 m of climbing from Barshaini, on a clear trail. Fit beginners manage it in 4–6 hours up. The path can be muddy and slippery after rain. Walk slowly near the top because of the altitude.

Can I stay overnight at Kheerganga?

At times, camps and simple shelters have operated at Kheerganga; at other times the authorities have restricted them to protect the meadow. Rules change, so check current status before you travel. If overnight stays are not allowed, plan a long day trip or stay in Nakthan or Barshaini.

Do I need a guide for Kheerganga?

The main trail is well marked and busy in season, but a local guide is wise for first-timers, in early spring or late autumn, and in bad weather. Never trek alone. A guide costs about ₹1,500–2,500 a day and knows the current rules on overnight stays.
