The Goecha La trek from Yuksom
Trek from Yuksom through Khangchendzonga National Park, via Sachen, Tshoka and Dzongri, to the viewpoints below the Goecha La, facing the east face of Kangchenjunga. It is a high, demanding trek that needs a registered agency, a licensed guide and good acclimatisation.
The trail leaves Yuksom and climbs through forest along the Prek Chu to Sachen and Tshoka, then up through rhododendron to Dzongri, at around 4,000 m, known for its sunrise view of Kangchenjunga and its neighbours. The route continues past Kokchurang and Thansing to Lamuney and the Samiti lake, then climbs before dawn to the viewpoints below the Goecha La.
Most itineraries take 8–11 days, and many groups turn around at View Point 1, at about 4,600 m, which is the usual high point for trekkers. The landscape changes from subtropical forest to alpine meadows, moraine and glacial lakes, all within a protected World Heritage Site. Teahouses are few; you camp or use simple trekkers' huts.
Treks must be booked with a registered agency, which arranges the park permits, a licensed guide, porters or yaks, and food. Foreigners need additional permits and must travel in groups. Altitude is a serious risk: build in rest days, ascend slowly and descend if symptoms worsen. Talk to your doctor before booking. Rules and fees change; check current status before you travel.

Questions
Before you book
Do I need a guide for Goecha La?
Yes. Treks into Khangchendzonga National Park must be organised through a registered agency with a licensed guide. The agency arranges the permits. Check current status before you travel.
What is the best time for the Goecha La trek?
April to May for rhododendrons and October to November for the clearest views. Winter brings heavy snow, and the monsoon makes trails slippery and views rare.
How difficult is the Goecha La trek?
It is a demanding high-altitude trek, reaching about 4,600 m at View Point 1, with long days and steep climbs. Good fitness, proper gear and acclimatisation days are essential.
