Climb to Tabo's meditation caves
A short, steep path from the village climbs to caves cut into the cliff above Tabo, once used by monks for meditation, with faint paintings and a wide view of the monastery below.
Above the village, a cliff of soft rock is dotted with caves. Monks once used them for meditation and retreat, and one larger cave was used as an assembly hall. Traces of painting remain on some walls.
The path is short but steep and loose, about 20–30 minutes up from the village. Wear shoes with grip and go slowly, even though Tabo is the lowest stop in Spiti. Late afternoon is best: the cliff faces west and the light falls across the monastery roofs.
Treat the caves as sacred places. Do not write on walls, do not light fires or candles, and take any rubbish back down. From the top, you can see the old complex's layout clearly: the enclosure wall, the temples and the stupas along the river.
