Most trips to Arunachal see either Tawang or Ziro. This one does both, and the contrast is the point. In the west you stay among Monpa monasteries, prayer flags and stone villages, at about 1,600–2,700 m. Then you cross back to the plains and climb again into the Apatani valley, where rice and fish grow in the same fields and villages are built of wood and bamboo.

We use the best stays in each place: Rungkhung Village Resort in Dirang, Vivanta Tawang, and Siiro Resort in Ziro. The night at Bhalukpong, which splits the long transfer, is the simplest of the trip, in the best available lodge by the Kameng. A private guide travels with you throughout, and in Ziro a guide from the Apatani community joins for village days.

Highlights

  • Tawang Monastery and the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama
  • The crossing of Sela at about 4,170 m
  • Three nights at Vivanta Tawang
  • Apatani villages of Hong and Hari with a local guide
  • Rice-and-fish terraces and pine groves of the Ziro valley

Over Sela to Tawang

Night: Tawang4,170 m≈ 140 km · 6–7 h with stopsMeals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

About Sela Pass
4Day

Tawang Monastery and Urgelling

Night: Tawang2,669 m≈ 20 km localMeals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Morning prayers at Tawang Monastery, then the museum and library with your guide. After lunch, visit Urgelling, birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama in 1683, and watch Mon shugu paper being made by hand. Sunset at the Tawang War Memorial. Your guide explains the murals, the giant Buddha image and the monastic routine. Dress modestly, walk clockwise around shrines and ask before photographing monks.

About Tawang

6Day

Back to Dirang

Night: Dirang1,620 m≈ 140 km · 5–6 hMeals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

A slow morning in Tawang, perhaps a visit to Ani Gompa or the carpet workshops, then drive back over Sela or through the tunnel to Rungkhung Village Resort for one more night in the orchards. Your driver times the crossing for the clearest part of the day. Dinner is at the resort, and the afternoon is free for a walk in the orchards or simply rest after the cold of Tawang.

About Dirang
7Day

Down to the Kameng at Bhalukpong

Night: Bhalukpong213 m≈ 145 km · 5–6 hMeals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Drive down through Bomdila and Tenga to the plains at Bhalukpong. In the afternoon, walk the stony bank of the Kameng. Tonight's lodge is the simplest stay of the trip; it splits what would otherwise be a 12-hour transfer to Ziro. Lunch is at Bomdila or Tenga. The change from the cold of the hills to the warm, humid plains is sudden, so keep light clothes in your day bag. Keep permits handy for the exit check at the gate.

About Bhalukpong
8Day

Across the plains and up to Ziro

Night: Ziro1,688 m≈ 330 km · 9–10 hMeals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

A long day. Drive east along the north bank of the Brahmaputra through Gohpur, enter Arunachal again near Itanagar, and climb through Yazali to the Ziro valley. Your driver plans tea and lunch stops. Check into Siiro Resort, above the paddies, by early evening. Your guide carries your Inner Line Permit for Papum Pare and Lower Subansiri, checked on entry near Itanagar. Expect the last stretch from Yazali to be slow and winding.

About Ziro
10Day

Fields, pine groves and pike pila

Walk the bunds of the rice-and-fish terraces with your guide, then climb into the pine and bamboo groves the clans manage on the hills. Your guide can also take you to Hapoli market, where you may find Apatani textiles and smoked meats.

About Ziro
11Day

Ziro to Donyi Polo Airport

1,688 m≈ 140 km · 4–5 hMeals: Breakfast

Drive down from the valley through Yazali to Donyi Polo Airport at Hollongi, near Itanagar, for an afternoon flight. If your flight is late, there is time for a stop in Itanagar on the way. Check flight timings carefully, since departures from Donyi Polo Airport are limited and schedules change. In the monsoon months we leave extra time for landslides on the Ziro road. Say goodbye to your guide and driver at the terminal.

Questions

About this trip

Why combine Tawang and Ziro in one trip?

They show two very different sides of Arunachal: Buddhist Monpa highlands in the west and the Apatani farming valley in the centre. Together they give a far fuller picture than either alone.

What does ₹2,10,000 per person include?

Ten nights in the best available stays with all meals, a private SUV and driver, a private guide throughout plus an Apatani guide in Ziro, and all fees, for two sharing. Flights, drinks and tips are extra. Indicative 2026 price.

Why is there a night at Bhalukpong?

Tawang to Ziro is too far for one or even two comfortable days. A night at Dirang and one at Bhalukpong on the plains edge split it. The Bhalukpong lodge is simple, but the next day is shorter and safer.

Is Ziro comfortable enough for a signature trip?

Ziro has no luxury hotel. Siiro Resort has comfortable wooden rooms with attached bathrooms and is the best stay in the valley. What makes Ziro special is time with Apatani families, which a guide arranges.

When is the best time for this trip?

March to April and October to November, when both Tawang and Ziro are at their best. Late September brings the Ziro Festival of Music but some rain. Winter is possible but cold in Tawang.

Will altitude be a problem?

Only on the Tawang section, where Sela and the lakes are above 4,000 m. Two nights in Dirang first help most people. Ziro is at about 1,500–1,700 m.

Can we fly out of Ziro?

Ziro's small airport has had limited regional flights. Donyi Polo Airport near Itanagar is more reliable, about 4–5 hours by road. Check current status before you travel.

Is this trip suitable for seniors?

Yes, for seniors in good health who can manage several long drives. The pace includes rest days, and the guide can adapt walks. Talk to your doctor about the altitude on the Tawang days.

Which permits do we need?

Indian visitors need an Inner Line Permit listing West Kameng, Tawang, Papum Pare and Lower Subansiri; we arrange it. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit through a registered operator. Check current status before you travel.
