Ladarcha fair, Kaza
Ladarcha began as a summer trade fair where traders from Spiti, Ladakh, Kinnaur and Rampur exchanged wool, salt, horses and grain. Today it is Spiti's biggest public fair, held over a few days on the Kaza ground with folk dance, sport, stalls and visitors from every village.

Ladarcha was where those paths met for a summer market. Traders brought wool, salt and animals from the north, and grain, cloth and metal goods from the south, and the fair was held for many years on a high meadow on the old route north of Kibber before it moved down to Kaza.
Today the Ladarcha fair is organised in Kaza, usually over three days in the third week of August. The ground below the town fills with stalls selling woollens, dried apricots, utensils and clothing, and the evenings bring cultural programmes with Spitian, Kinnauri and Lahauli folk dances in traditional dress. There are sports, government stalls and a steady crowd from Pin, Kibber, Tabo and the villages.
For travellers it is the easiest time to see Spiti's communities gathered in one place and to hear its songs. Kaza's rooms are full, and August is also the month of landslides on the approach roads, so book early and keep a spare day. Dates are announced each year by the district administration; check current status before you travel.
Tips for the day
- Book Kaza rooms early or stay in Rangrik, Kibber or Langza if you are already acclimatised.
- The evening cultural programmes are the highlight; carry a warm layer as temperatures drop fast after sunset.
- Buy local woollens and dried fruit from village stalls rather than outside sellers.
