Losar marks the start of the Tibetan year and follows the lunar calendar, so it falls in February or early March. In McLeodganj, home of the Central Tibetan Administration and a large Tibetan community since the 1960s, it is the biggest event of the year. Preparations begin days ahead: homes are cleaned, families fry khapse, crisp twisted biscuits, and kitchens prepare offerings for the altar.

Two days before the new year, families eat guthuk, a noodle soup with dough balls that hide small objects such as chilli, wool or salt; what you find in your bowl is read as a playful comment on your character for the coming year. The following day is given to rituals for clearing away the old year's obstacles. On Losar morning, people visit the temple and monasteries early, offer khata scarves and greet each other with Losar Tashi Delek.

Through the three days of celebration, new prayer flags go up on rooftops and on the hill paths around the Lingkor, the circuit around the Tsuglagkhang. Monks at the Tsuglagkhang complex and Namgyal Monastery hold prayers, and the community visits friends and family. For visitors, Losar means watching quietly, joining the circuit walk, and accepting that many Tibetan shops and restaurants close for a few days.

Tips for the day

  • Walk the Lingkor circuit early on Losar morning, clockwise, and keep to the side for people offering prayers.
  • Expect Tibetan-run cafés and shops to close on the main days; Indian-run dhabas and hotels stay open.
  • Dress modestly and ask before photographing people at prayer, and never during rituals inside the temple.

Questions

About Losar in McLeodganj

When is Losar celebrated in McLeodganj?

Losar falls on the first day of the first month of the Tibetan lunar calendar, usually in February or early March. The main celebration lasts three days. Dates change each year; check the Tibetan calendar or the Central Tibetan Administration's announcements before you travel.

Can tourists take part in Losar?

Yes, respectfully. Visitors can walk the Lingkor, visit the Tsuglagkhang complex and watch prayer-flag hanging. Celebrations are mostly family and community events, so do not expect staged shows. A simple Losar Tashi Delek greeting is always welcome.

Is February too cold for McLeodganj?

It is cold but manageable: days around 8–15 °C and nights near or below freezing, with occasional snow on the hills above. Bring warm layers; many guesthouses have limited heating, so ask for heaters or extra blankets.

Does the Dalai Lama appear during Losar?

Sometimes he leads prayers or teachings around the new year, but his schedule varies and he is not always in Dharamshala. Check the official schedule on his office's website before planning a trip around a public appearance.
