Morning at Samten Yongcha monastery
Walk or drive up to the old Memba monastery above Mechuka for morning prayers, butter lamps and a wide view over the Siyom valley and its ring of ridges.
Samten Yongcha stands on a ridge above Mechuka, looking down over the town, the river and the grassland. It is a Mahayana Buddhist monastery, said locally to be around 400 years old, and remains the spiritual centre for the Memba of the valley. Inside the prayer hall are Buddhist images, butter lamps and painted walls.
Go early. In the morning the valley is often full of mist that burns off as the sun reaches the ridge, and you may hear chanting or see families making offerings. Walk around the monastery clockwise, as is the custom, and leave a small offering if you wish. Ask before entering the prayer hall, remove your shoes, and do not photograph inside without clear permission.
You can drive up in a few minutes or walk from town in about an hour on a steep track. Carry a warm jacket, since mornings are cold at any time of year. Combine the visit with a slow walk back down to the river, stopping at the prayer wheels and chortens on the way.
