Memba homestays, Mechuka
Memba family homestays are the main places to stay in Mechuka: timber houses near the Siyom with warm kitchens, home-cooked meals and butter tea, and hosts who know the valley, its walks and its weather.
Mechuka has grown a network of homestays since the road improved, run by Memba families in and around the town. Rooms are wooden, often on the upper floor, with thick quilts for cold nights. Bathrooms vary: some homestays have attached bathrooms with geysers, others share one with bucket hot water. Power cuts are common, so carry a headtorch.
Meals are eaten with the family, usually rice, potatoes, greens, pork or chicken and butter tea. Hosts can arrange taxis, guides for valley walks, and Sumo seats back to Aalo. In winter, confirm heating and road conditions before you set out, and in October book ahead, as the valley's limited rooms fill quickly.

Mechuka
Mechuka is a broad valley at about 1,830 m on the Siyom river in Shi Yomi district, home to Memba Buddhists and reached by a long road from Aalo. Wooden homestays, a centuries-old monastery and open grassland under snow peaks make it worth the journey. Stay 3 nights; come March–May or October–November.
