Hotel Gakyi Khang Zhang, Tawang
One of Tawang's longest-established hotels, Gakyi Khang Zhang sits in town with views towards the monastery and the hills. Rooms are warm and comfortable by local standards, which matters on freezing winter nights.
Gakyi Khang Zhang is a familiar name to anyone who has planned a Tawang trip: a town hotel built in local style with painted woodwork, a restaurant serving Indian, Chinese and Monpa dishes, and rooms with heaters and hot water. Upper rooms on the valley side look across to Tawang Monastery on its ridge.
It is a practical base for the monastery, the war memorial and the day circuit to Sela and the high lakes, and drivers know it well. We use it on comfort trips. Rooms vary in size and view, so ask for a valley-facing room, and book early for October, May and the Torgya festival in January.
Why we use it
- Established town hotel with heaters and hot water
- Valley rooms face Tawang Monastery
- Central for the monastery, market and drivers

Tawang
Tawang is a Monpa town at about 2,670 m in far western Arunachal, built below India's largest Buddhist monastery. Give it three nights: one for the monastery and Urgelling, one for the high lakes, and one spare for weather. It is 320–500 km from Tezpur or Guwahati over Sela Pass or the new tunnel.
