Sunrise on Everest and the Sleeping Buddha

Wake before dawn on Sandakphu, the highest point in West Bengal, and watch first light reach Kangchenjunga's Sleeping Buddha outline to the north and Everest, Lhotse and Makalu to the west, all from a single summit.

Sandakphu's summit is a short walk from the lodges. Get there 30 minutes before sunrise in every warm layer you have; on autumn mornings it is often well below freezing and windy. As the sky lightens, the Kangchenjunga range appears across the north, its outline of peaks resembling a reclining figure that locals call the Sleeping Buddha.

To the west, Everest, Lhotse and Makalu rise above the Nepal ranges, with Chamlang and Baruntse nearby. They catch the light within minutes of Kangchenjunga. Very few places in the world show four of the five highest mountains from one spot, and on a clear morning the view lasts for hours rather than minutes.

Clear mornings are most likely from October to December. Spring brings haze and afternoon cloud but also rhododendrons. In the monsoon, views are rare. If the first morning is cloudy, consider an extra night; many trekkers build one in for this reason.

Questions

Before you book

Can I really see Everest from Sandakphu?

Yes, on clear mornings. Everest, Lhotse and Makalu are visible to the west and Kangchenjunga to the north. Everest is much farther away and looks smaller than Kangchenjunga, which is closer. October to December gives the best odds.

How cold is it at Sandakphu at sunrise?

In October and November, expect around −5 to 5 °C at sunrise, colder with wind; in December to February it can drop below −10 °C. Wear a down jacket, thermals, gloves, a cap and warm socks. Lodges have little or no heating.

What if it is cloudy on my Sandakphu morning?

Wait, since cloud sometimes clears after sunrise. If not, consider staying another night if your plan allows. Many trekkers add a buffer day. Phalut, further north, gives another chance for views.
