A gentle 1.5 km walk downstream from Gangotri through deodar and boulders to Pandav Gufa, a rock cave linked with the Pandavas. Ideal for acclimatising on arrival or for a quiet morning away from the temple crowds.

The path to Pandav Gufa leaves Gangotri and follows the Bhagirathi downstream through a forest of deodar and pine. It is mostly level, with a few rocky steps, and takes 30–40 minutes each way at an easy pace. The river is loud and milky-blue here, cutting between polished granite walls.

Pandav Gufa is a natural rock shelter where, in local tradition, the Pandavas meditated on their way to the high Himalaya. Sadhus sometimes live in and around the cave, and there may be a small fire or shrine; greet them politely and do not photograph them without asking. A donation is customary if you are offered tea.

The walk is a good first outing on arrival: gentle exercise at 3,000 m helps the body adjust. Carry water and a warm layer, as the forest is shaded and cool. Stay on the path and away from the river edge; the rocks are slippery and the current is lethal. Come back the same way, ideally in time for lunch and a rest before the evening aarti.

Questions

Before you book

How far is Pandav Gufa from Gangotri?

About 1.5 km downstream along a forest path, 30–40 minutes each way at an easy pace. It is mostly level with a few rocky steps, suitable for children and fit seniors.

Is the Pandav Gufa walk good for acclimatisation?

Yes. A gentle walk on your first afternoon in Gangotri, at about 3,000–3,100 m, helps your body adjust before the Gaumukh trek or the drive back down. Keep the pace easy and drink water.

Can I visit sadhus at Pandav Gufa?

Sadhus sometimes stay near the cave. Visitors may greet them respectfully, but do not photograph them without permission or expect them to perform. A small donation is customary if you are offered tea.
