Kalpa sits on a sloping shelf high above the Sutlej, 7 km and 500 m above Reckong Peo, the district headquarters of Kinnaur. Across the gorge rises the Kinnaur Kailash range, its main summit at about 6,050 m. A rock pinnacle on its flank is worshipped as a Shiva lingam, and pilgrims walk a multi-day circuit around the mountain. From Kalpa you see the whole wall from your window, and at sunrise it turns orange and then white.

The village itself is old Kinnaur. Houses are built of stone and deodar with slate roofs, the Narayan-Nagini temple has fine wood carving, and a small Buddhist temple stands nearby; Kinnauri life mixes Hindu and Buddhist practice. Around the village are apple orchards, and on the slopes below grow chilgoza pines, whose nuts are a prized local crop. In September and October the orchards are busy with picking, grading and packing.

Kalpa is the natural night stop between Shimla and Spiti, and a destination in its own right for two or three slow days. At nearly 3,000 m, take the first afternoon easy if you have come straight from the plains, and talk to your doctor if you have heart or lung conditions. The road along the Sutlej from Shimla is long and sometimes blocked by slides, so build in a buffer day.

What to do in Kalpa

Sunrise on Kinnaur Kailash

From Kalpa's terraces the whole range glows at dawn. Find a spot on the village road or your hotel balcony by 5:30 am in summer. The rock pinnacle worshipped as a Shiva lingam is visible with binoculars.

Roghi village walk

A 3 km walk or drive from Kalpa along a road cut into the cliff to Roghi, a village of orchards and old houses with views straight down to the Sutlej. Easy, with no traffic in the mornings.

Narayan-Nagini temple

A wooden temple in the old village with carved panels and a pagoda-style roof, the centre of village festivals. Remove shoes and ask before photographing inside.

Apple country

Kalpa's slopes are orchard after orchard. In April they blossom; from September to October they are harvested. Many homestays are inside working orchards.

Chilgoza pine forests

On the drier slopes around Kalpa and Reckong Peo, chilgoza pines produce prized nuts harvested in autumn. Buy them in Reckong Peo market in October and November.

Questions

Kalpa, answered

How do I reach Kalpa from Shimla?

By HRTC bus from Shimla's ISBT Tutikandi to Reckong Peo, about 9–10 hours, then a local bus or taxi 7 km up to Kalpa. By private car it is about 225 km and 8–9 hours along NH5 via Narkanda and Rampur. Start early to cross landslide zones in daylight.

What is the best time to visit Kalpa?

April to June and September to October. April has orchard blossom, May and June are pleasant, and autumn has the clearest views and apple harvest. Winter is very cold with snow, and many hotels close. Monsoon brings slides on the Sutlej road.

Do I need a permit for Kalpa?

Indian citizens need no permit for Kalpa, Reckong Peo or Sangla. Foreign nationals can visit Kalpa freely but need an Inner Line Permit to continue towards Spiti beyond Jangi; it is issued in Reckong Peo and Shimla. Check current status before you travel.

Will I get altitude sickness in Kalpa?

Kalpa is close to 3,000 m, and some people coming directly from the plains feel headaches or breathlessness on the first night. Arrive via Shimla or Sarahan, rest on the first afternoon, drink water and avoid alcohol. Talk to your doctor if you have heart or lung conditions.

Is there mobile network in Kalpa?

Yes, Jio, Airtel and BSNL work in Kalpa and Reckong Peo, though speeds vary. Coverage becomes patchy on parts of the Sutlej road. Most homestays have Wi-Fi, but it fails during power cuts.

Are there ATMs in Kalpa?

Reliable ATMs are in Reckong Peo, 7 km below. Kalpa itself has limited options. Withdraw enough cash in Rampur or Peo for your stay in Kalpa and Sangla, as UPI may fail when signal drops.

How many days should I stay in Kalpa?

Two to three nights: one day for sunrise, the village and Roghi, another for a slow orchard day or a trip to Reckong Peo market. If you are continuing to Spiti, Kalpa is a good acclimatisation stop of two nights.

Is Kalpa open in winter?

The village is lived in all year and the road from Reckong Peo usually stays open, though snow and ice can block it for a day or two. Many hotels, including HPTDC's, close from about December to March. Check current status before you travel.

Is Kalpa suitable for kids and seniors?

Yes for healthy travellers who can manage the long road from Shimla and the altitude near 3,000 m. Take two days for the drive with a stop in Sarahan or Narkanda, keep the first day easy, and talk to your doctor about anyone with heart or lung conditions.
