Day hike to Khaliya Top
Climb from Balati Bend through oak and rhododendron forest to the alpine meadows of Khaliya Top at about 3,500 m, for one of the widest views in Kumaon: Panchachuli, Nanda Devi East, Hardeol and the peaks of the Johar valley.
The trail starts at Balati Bend, a few kilometres up the road from Munsiyari, where a forest gate marks the start. It climbs steadily through dense oak and rhododendron, then opens into meadows at the treeline. Most hikers take 3–4 hours up and 2–3 hours down, gaining roughly 900 m. Some old maps show a rest hut at Khaliya; check whether it is open if you want to stay.
At the top the view runs from Panchachuli in the east across the Johar valley peaks to Nanda Devi East and Hardeol. In May and June the meadows are green and flowers start; in October and November the sky is clearest. Snow can lie on the upper slopes from December to April, when the hike becomes harder.
Khaliya Top is about 3,500 m. Sleeping in Munsiyari at 2,200 m and going up for the day is usually fine for healthy adults, but go slowly, drink water and turn back if you get a headache or dizziness. Talk to your doctor before the hike if you have heart or lung problems. Carry warm layers, rain gear, food and water.

Questions
Before you book
How difficult is the Khaliya Top trek?
It is a moderate day hike with a steady climb of about 900 m from Balati Bend to about 3,500 m. Fit walkers take 6–8 hours return. Snow in winter and spring makes it harder; a guide is advisable.
Do I need a guide for Khaliya Top?
The trail is used by many hikers, but fog can roll in fast and paths split in the meadows. A local guide costs about ₹1,500–2,500 per group and is recommended for first-timers.
Is altitude a problem on Khaliya Top?
Khaliya Top is about 3,500 m, but you sleep at 2,200 m in Munsiyari, which lowers the risk. Go slowly, drink water and descend if you feel unwell. Talk to your doctor if you have heart or lung conditions.
