The Kumaon Regiment is one of the Indian Army's most decorated regiments and recruits largely from Kumaon and neighbouring areas. Its regimental centre in Ranikhet keeps a museum with uniforms, weapons, medals, photographs and trophies from campaigns in both world wars and after. Its 4th battalion's Major Somnath Sharma received India's first Param Vir Chakra, for the defence of Srinagar in 1947.

The museum is inside the cantonment and run by the army, so access rules, timings and fees can change, and it may close for military reasons. Carry ID, follow staff instructions, and do not photograph outside the permitted areas. A memorial and well-kept grounds sit near the museum.

After the museum, walk the cantonment roads: the Mall, the old churches and the long stretches of pine forest the army keeps free of building. Traffic is light and the roads are mostly level, which makes this walk good for seniors and children. Stop for tea at the Sadar Bazaar on the way back.

Questions

Before you book

Is the Kumaon Regiment museum open to the public?

Yes, on most days, but it is inside an army cantonment, so timings, fees and access can change at short notice. Carry ID and check current status before you travel with your hotel or the regimental centre.

Why is Ranikhet linked to the Kumaon Regiment?

Ranikhet is home to the Kumaon Regimental Centre, the depot and training centre of the regiment, which recruits largely from the Kumaon hills. The Naga Regiment is also based here.

Can I take photos in Ranikhet cantonment?

Photographing scenery on public roads is generally fine, but do not photograph military buildings, gates, vehicles or personnel. Follow signs and any instruction from soldiers.
