A walk through Lachung village
Spend two hours walking the lanes of Lachung, across the suspension bridge and between wooden homes, orchards and small farm plots. Learn how the Dzumsa runs village affairs and how families divide their year between the valley and the high pastures.
Lachung divides into small hamlets on both banks of the Lachung Chu. A walk across the bridge and along the lanes shows traditional houses of wood and stone, with carved and painted windows, stacked firewood and prayer flags. In spring, fruit trees blossom in the yards; in autumn, families dry chillies and radish on rooftops.
The Lachungpas have their own traditions and their own system of local government. The Dzumsa, led by Pipons chosen by the community, settles disputes, organises village work and sets rules on grazing and visitors. Some homes still keep yaks in the high pastures above Yumthang in summer, bringing them down as winter comes.
A homestay host or a local guide can lead the walk and explain what you see. Keep to paths, do not enter fields or courtyards uninvited, and ask before photographing people. If you are staying two nights, this is the best way to spend the afternoon after Yumthang.

Questions
Before you book
What is the Dzumsa in Lachung?
The Dzumsa is the traditional village council of Lachung, led by elected headmen called Pipons. It settles local disputes and sets community rules, and works alongside the state's administration.
Can I find a guide for a village walk in Lachung?
Your homestay host or hotel can usually arrange a local guide for ₹500–1,000. Ask the evening before.
Is Lachung good for families?
Yes. The village is quiet and the walking is easy on the main lanes. Nights are cold, so bring warm layers for children, and keep an eye on them near the river and bridge.
