North Sikkim has few luxury lodges, and the best are simple compared with city hotels. What you pay for here is time, a guide who knows the road and checks you for altitude symptoms, and a private SUV that can wait out a landslide. In Gangtok we use The Elgin Nor-Khill for a proper rest at the start and end.

The order matters. Two nights in Gangtok, a day to Tsomgo at about 3,750 m, then Lachen at 2,750 m for two nights before Gurudongmar. Permit rules change and Gurudongmar has been open to Indian nationals only; we confirm your options before you pay. Check current status before you travel.

Highlights

  • The Elgin Nor-Khill as a rest base at both ends
  • Tsomgo Lake as a first step in altitude
  • Gurudongmar Lake at over 5,100 m with a guide who watches for symptoms
  • Yumthang Valley and the Lachung village monastery
  • Chungthang, where two rivers meet to form the Teesta

Questions

About this trip

Why is this the signature trip if the north is simple?

Because Gangtok's Elgin Nor-Khill, the guide, the permits and the private SUV give comfort and safety where the roads are hard. The lodges in Lachen and Lachung are the best available, not luxury hotels.

Is Gurudongmar open to foreigners?

It has been open to Indian nationals only on recent rules, and rules change. Ask us at enquiry. Check current status before you travel.

Is the Tsomgo day necessary?

It is a useful first step in altitude, from 1,650 m to 3,750 m, but not strictly required. We recommend it.

What is the best time for this trip?

April to May and October to November. Winter closes roads and lakes; monsoon brings landslides.

How do you manage altitude risk?

Gradual ascent, two nights in Lachen, short stays at the lake, a guide who knows symptoms and a vehicle to descend. We cannot remove risk; talk to your doctor.

Can we add Pelling and Yuksom?

Yes, see our heritage trip for Gangtok and Pelling; adding 2–3 nights and a western route is easy.

What happens if the road is closed?

We wait, change the order or substitute another day. Keep two buffer days before flights; landslides are common.

Do the lodges have heating?

Usually room heaters or electric blankets, plus quilts. Expect limited power and hot water; bring thermals.

Is this trip suitable for children?

Not for young children above 3,500 m. Teens in good health may manage; speak to your doctor.
