Spiti & Lahaul in January
Deep winter. The Manali side is shut at Kunzum, so Spiti is reached only from Shimla through Kinnaur, and even that road can close for a day or two after snow. Water pipes freeze, many cafes close, and homestays heat one room with a bukhari stove. This is the month for snow leopard trips from Kibber and for Halda, Lahaul's festival of torches. Only go with warm gear, a flexible return date and a local operator.
