Dwarika's Hotel
Kathmandu's best-known heritage hotel at Battisputali, built around a collection of carved Newar windows, doors and pillars rescued from demolished buildings. Brick courtyards, a pool, a spa and Newari banquets, close to Pashupatinath and Boudhanath.
Dwarika's began with one man's effort to save carved woodwork from old valley buildings being pulled down in the mid-20th century. The hotel that grew around that collection is built of brick in the Newar style, with courtyards, fountains and hundreds of antique carved windows, doors and struts set into the walls. Its workshop has helped train carvers and restorers.
Rooms are large and individually decorated with Newar craft and textiles. There is a pool, a spa and several restaurants, including Krishnarpan, known for long Nepali tasting menus. The location at Battisputali is closer to Pashupatinath and Boudhanath than to Thamel, which suits a slower, culture-focused stay.

Around the stay
Kathmandu
Kathmandu is Nepal's capital and the start of most trips, at about 1,400 m in the Kathmandu valley. Give it two or three nights: Durbar Square and the Kumari, the stupas of Swayambhunath and Boudhanath, and Pashupatinath on the Bagmati. Stay in Thamel for budget and trek logistics, or Battisputali for Dwarika's.
