The Ramgarh Bungalows
Neemrana's set of restored 19th-century cottages at Ramgarh, about 25 km before Mukteshwar, stands among orchards that supply its own jams. Quiet, old-fashioned and well suited to writers and slow stays.
Neemrana Hotels restores old buildings across India, and at Ramgarh it runs a group of colonial-era cottages in Malla Ramgarh, about 35 km from Nainital on the road to Mukteshwar. The Old Bungalow is the oldest building in Ramgarh and was once a dak bungalow, a halt for officials and post on horseback. Other cottages are spread across the slope.
The orchards around the bungalows grow apricots, plums, peaches, pears and apples in summer, and the estate makes jams from them. Meals include Kumaoni dishes and breakfasts outdoors facing the hills. Ramgarh's links with the poet Mahadevi Verma and with Rabindranath Tagore make it a natural base for a writing retreat, and Mukteshwar's temple and cliffs are a short drive away.
