Amankora was designed to be travelled as a circuit, one hotel spread across several valleys, and this route uses four of its lodges, two nights each. The buildings share a style of rammed-earth walls, pine and stone, and each sits in a quiet corner of its valley away from the town. That lets the days start at your hour: dzongs before the groups arrive, the crane marsh at first light, the Taktsang trail early.

The price shown is for Indian nationals, who pay a Sustainable Development Fee of ₹1,200 a night as we understand the current rules. Most other nationalities pay USD 100 a night until 31 August 2027, also as we understand it. The rules have changed several times since 2022; check current status before you travel. Room rates at Amankora vary by season and we quote them exactly when you enquire.

Questions

About this trip

How much does a Bhutan trip at Amankora cost?

From about ₹6,50,000 per person, twin share, for 8 nights for Indian nationals, including full board, private guide, car and SDF, but not flights. Rates vary by season and room type, and non-Indian nationals pay a higher SDF. We quote exactly when you enquire.

What is the SDF for this trip?

As we understand the current rules, ₹9,600 per Indian adult for 8 nights at ₹1,200 a night, or USD 800 for most other adults at USD 100 a night. Children 6–12 pay half, under-6s pay nothing. These rules change; check current status before you travel.

Why not stay at all five Amankora lodges?

The fifth lodge is in Bumthang, a long drive or a domestic flight further east. Adding it needs about four more nights to avoid rushed days. If you have 12 nights or more, we can include it and the dzong at Trongsa on the way.

Is Amankora good for a honeymoon?

Yes. The lodges are small and quiet, set apart from towns, and days are planned around the two of you rather than a group. Days can be as active or slow as you like. Spring and autumn are the best seasons; winter is colder but clear and very peaceful.

When will we see black-necked cranes?

From about late October to February, when they winter in the Phobjikha valley below Amankora Gangtey. Early mornings and late afternoons are best. The Black-necked Crane Festival at Gangtey Goenpa is held in November. Outside those months the marsh is still beautiful but empty of cranes.

Can we time this trip with the Paro or Thimphu Tshechu?

Yes, and many guests do. Paro Tshechu falls in March or April and Thimphu Tshechu in September or October. Lodges book out early for those dates. We reorder the circuit so you attend the main day; check current status before you travel, as lunar dates move.

How hard is the Tiger's Nest hike?

Moderate: about 4–5 km each way with roughly 500–600 m of climbing to 3,120 m, 5–6 hours return for fit adults. A pony can go to the cafeteria. By day 8 you have slept at 3,000 m in Gangtey, which helps. Talk to your doctor if you have heart or lung conditions.

Can children stay at Amankora?

Families can stay. Tell us the children's ages when you enquire and we confirm suite and bed options with each lodge. As we understand the SDF rules, under-6s pay none and 6–12s pay half; check current status before you travel.

Are flights to Paro included?

No. Flights to Paro run from several cities in India and Asia on Drukair and Bhutan Airlines and land in daylight only. We help you book and plan around weather delays, and recommend a spare night before any onward long-haul flight.
