Across the Lidder to the Mamleshwar temple

A short walk over the Lidder bridge leads to Mamleshwar, a small old stone Shiva temple with a spring-fed tank, on the edge of Mamal village. It is a calm counterpoint to the busy bazaar and shows Pahalgam's long history as a sacred valley.

From the main bazaar, cross the bridge over the East Lidder and follow the road about 1 km to Mamal village. The temple is a compact stone shrine to Shiva with a pyramidal roof, built in the early Kashmiri style, beside a small tank fed by a spring. It is one of the older surviving shrines in the Lidder valley and is still in worship.

Visit early in the morning when the village is waking and the light falls across the fields. Remove shoes before entering, keep your voice low, and ask before photographing worshippers. Local families may be drawing water from the spring; give them space.

Return along the river by a different path if the weather is dry. The walk is flat and suits seniors and children, and it shows the farming side of Pahalgam: walnut trees, maize and vegetable plots, and wooden village houses with grass roofs on stone bases.

Questions

Before you book

How far is the Mamleshwar temple from Pahalgam bazaar?

About 1 km across the Lidder bridge, a 15–20 minute flat walk. Taxis can also drop you at the village. The temple and spring are open from early morning; ask locally about timings for worship.

Can non-Hindus visit the Mamleshwar temple?

Visitors are generally welcome to see the temple respectfully. Remove shoes, dress modestly, and follow any instructions from the caretaker. Do not touch the deity or enter areas closed to visitors.

Is the Mamleshwar walk suitable in winter?

Yes, if the path is clear of ice. Pahalgam sees snow from December to February, so wear boots with good grip and walk in daylight. The temple is quiet and lovely under snow.
