Muktinath: 108 spouts and an eternal flame
Drive up from Jomsom to Muktinath, at about 3,760 m, where Hindus bathe under 108 water spouts and Buddhists honour Chumig Gyatsa, the Hundred Waters. One of the most important pilgrimages in Nepal for Indian travellers.
Start early. Shared jeeps leave Jomsom for Muktinath in the morning and take about 1.5 hours along a road that climbs above Kagbeni with views of Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri. The road ends at Ranipauwa village, from where it is a 15–20 minute climb up steps to the temple compound; ponies and porters are available for those who need them.
The main pagoda temple is dedicated to Vishnu as Muktinath, and Sri Vaishnavas count it among the 108 Divya Desams. Behind it are 108 water spouts shaped like cow heads, where pilgrims bathe or sprinkle themselves with the icy water, and two small ponds. Nearby, the Jwala Mai shrine holds a small flame fed by natural gas burning beside a spring. Tibetan Buddhists know the place as Chumig Gyatsa and revere it as a seat of Avalokiteshvara.
Muktinath is at about 3,760 m. Walk slowly, drink water, and do not go up the same day you fly into Jomsom if you can avoid it. The Kali Gandaki valley also yields shaligram stones, black ammonite fossils that Hindus worship as forms of Vishnu; buy only from licensed shops, and never take them from the riverbed in protected areas.

Questions
Before you book
How do I reach Muktinath from Jomsom?
Shared jeeps run in about 1.5 hours to Ranipauwa, then a 15–20 minute uphill walk to the temple. Private jeeps cost more and give you flexibility.
Is Muktinath safe for elderly pilgrims?
Many seniors visit, but the altitude of about 3,760 m is serious. Spend a night at Jomsom or Marpha first, walk slowly, and talk to your doctor before travelling.
Do Indians need a permit for Muktinath?
Muktinath lies in the Annapurna Conservation Area, so an ACAP permit is needed: NPR 1,000 for SAARC nationals. Check current status before you travel.
